11/02/2021 @ 3:25 pm

1. Turkey is low fat and features a great source of protein, iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, and B vitamins.

2. Pumpkins plants (squash) were an important part of the agrarian Native Americans’ “three sisters” planting formula (to shade out weeds). Planted with the pumpkins were corn to support beans and beans to provide nitrogen for the corn’s growth.

3. Sweet potatoes (from the morning glory family) and yams (from the lily family) are from two separate plant families.

4. Consider the sheer number of different types of farmers that are required for the average Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, hog, dairy, vegetable, cranberry, sugar beet, corn, soybean, wheat, sorghum, hops, honey, specialty spice and herbs, beef, and many more.

5. According to American Farm Bureau Federation cost survey in 2020, the average Thanksgiving dinner was down 4%. To find out what this year’s survey says (available around Thanksgiving day), go to www.fb.org.
