5 Things you should know about farming and Halloween...

  1. It’s believed that Halloween’s origins lie in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain celebrated from October 31 - November 1. This marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and included celebratory feasts in celebration of agriculture.
  1. Candy corn and other sorts of candy would not exist without farmers producing and harvesting beans from the cocoa tree and sugar from sugar cane, sugar beets, and corn.
  2. Caramel apples are tasty to the core with the help of farmers that own and operate orchards.
  3. Originally, in Ireland, turnips were carved and used as lanterns which has led to our modern-day tradition of pumpkin carving and jack-o’-lanterns.
  4. Hayrides are a tradition enjoyed by many celebrating Halloween. As you may know, most “hay” rides actually use straw bales on the wagon to sit on.
