Victory Gardens return to Headlines

05/04/2020 @ 12:30 pm

The food challenges we are facing today as part of COVID- 19 were not even a thought back in April 2015 when our Ag Lit Bit topic was planting a Victory Garden. The origins of the gardens date back to WWI when the National War Garden Commission promoted home gardening and food preservation which became known as Victory Gardens. At the beginning of World War II, the importance of these home gardens grew once again, ultimately supplying nearly 40%of the fruits and vegetables consumed in the U.S. The concept not only provided individuals with a source of their own food security, but also was a way to boost morale. This past month we have seen another resurgence in gardening with seed sales exploding and families planning their summer gardens. We will have a wide variety of resources available for families and educators during the next few months which can be found on our webpage.
