Ag Lit BitA Changing World this Earth Day

04/02/2020 @ 1:45 pm | By Diane Merrion

A few months ago, I wrote about not understanding something unless you’ve experienced it.  Unfortunately, we have a whole new generation experiencing something that none of us have experienced but will most certainly always remember.

Last week we were doing an Earth Day workshop here at the farm bureau and talking about being good stewards of the earth and exploring how we got to where we are today with the challenges facing the environment.

I’ve got to say that experience does change habits which brings me back to my childhood and reflecting on the habits of my grandparents.  Why did they clean, fold and reuse the foil, the wax paper, the bags?  Why did they move the geraniums from the yard and store them in the basement all winter and replant them the next spring? Why did they work so hard on their vegetable garden and can the leftovers?

They didn’t need Earth Day as a reminder to be stewards of the land. Nothing was wasted. They lived through hard times that created their habits and it appears that we may be living through times that will ultimately change our habits.

Every Day is Earth Day on the Farm is quoted on this year’s t-shirts developed by Illinois Ag in the Classroom in honor  the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.  This Earth Day (April 22nd) and every day we thank the farmers whose chosen work is providing us with food to sustain us during this crisis.

Not knowing what tomorrow will bring, I’m looking forward to April sunshine, the sounds of birds, the smell of growing grass and most of all, new experiences with family and friends.
