Action Request: Urge Congress to pass a farm bill during the lame duck session

11/08/2018 @ 2:35 pm

Cook County Farm Bureau® members have patiently waited for Congress to pass the next farm bill.   The election is now over.  No more excuses for inaction.   And time is short.  There’s only a month- roughly 16 session days- to get a farm bill passed and enacted before the end of the year.  The new 116th Congress will be sworn in on Thursday, January 3.

If the “lame duck” Congress is unable to pass a farm bill for the President to sign, the new Congress will be forced to start from scratch.   That could delay a farm bill for months.

That’s a nightmare scenario that we must work to avoid at all costs.

Our action request urges the Illinois delegation to pressure farm bill negotiators to do everything they can to avoid a nightmare scenario.   In a nutshell:  Strike a deal and pass a farm bill before time runs out on the 115th Congress.
