It Could Only Be Fresher If You Picked It Yourself

We grow veggies, lots and lots of fresh veggies. Our family sells at eight farmers markets every week, plus direct from our home farm stand and to Mariano’s for their store in Frankfort. Our selling season starts in early spring with flowers, transitions into fresh produce in the summer months and finishes right before Thanksgiving with the last of the fall harvest. We grow a wide variety of produce, including zucchini, pickles, beets, onions, kale, tomatoes, jalapenos, squash and pumpkins. Questions about what we grow and how we grow it have always been part of our conversations at the markets. But lately, we’re getting one question more than others: “Is this organic?” When the answer is no, unfortunately most people don’t stick around long enough to understand why. It’s frustrating. When they do ask more questions it’s usually on one topic – chemicals, or the idea of using anything not natural.   Let’s break it down and I’ll share what I d ...

Hot Issues in Agriculture - Chicago Tribune series on pork production in Illinois

Hot Issues in Agriculture | Chicago Tribune series on pork production in Illinois Some of our members may have read or heard about the Chicago Tribune series on pork production in Illinois entitled “The high price of cheap pork”.  The articles focused on facility siting, local resident input, animal welfare, and the environment. The Illinois Pork Producers Association became aware of the development of the series earlier in the year. As a result, the IPPA had multiple contacts with the reporters over the months and helped provide 30+ people to be interviewed. They include farmers, government agency officials, university researchers and veterinarians. Virtually none of the information from those interviews was included in the articles. Both IPPA’s and NPB’s presidents have written letters to the editor of the Tribune regarding the series  and IFB President Richard Guebert, Jr. released a statement to Farm Bureau’s membership regarding the series: PPA Tribune Le ...

Manifolds, Manolos & Manure...by Bona Heinsohn

The year was 1972.  CBS launched the first episode of The Price is Right and The Godfather appeared in theatres.  President Richard Nixon ordered the development of a Space Shuttle program and women made their first appearance as official competitors in the Boston Marathon. Locally, Cook County voters were given the opportunity to reduce the size of their elected government.  Unsurprisingly, voters overwhelmingly agreed to replace the position of elected coroner with an appointed medical examiner. 1972 was 44 years ago. Earlier this year, Cook County Commissioners approved a resolution placing a bidding countywide referendum on the ballot this fall.  Voters will (for the first time in 44 years, just in case you missed the short paragraph above) have the opportunity to decide: “Shall the Office of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds be eliminated and all duties and responsibilities off the Office of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds be transferred to, and assumed by, the Office of th ...
