FARM Illinois

Yesterday, several Cook County Farm Bureau leaders participated in the FARM Illinois rollout briefing held at Kendall College in Chicago.  During the briefing, Mr. Terry Mazany, Mr. Jim Schultz and Mr. Lee Strom presented information on the future of Agriculture and Food in Illinois and the Chicagoland area.  Illinois and the Chicago region has lead the country for many decades (nearly 2 centuries) in the production, processing, distribution and sales of farm products and food.  However, the rapid rate of change in the world will change the future of Illinois agriculture and food. Over the past year, state and local farm and food leaders, concerned about the future of food and agriculture in Illinois, have met to develop a food and agriculture road map for Illinois (FARM Illinois).  The briefing yesterday provided people interested in food and farming to view the “road map” and become engaged in the effort.  The plan (find out more at www.farmillinois.org) focuses on the ...

Experts Discuss Antibiotic use in Animals

Kim Morton, pictured right, discusses farming with families at the Summer Nights program at the Brookfield Zoo.  Volunteers and families discussed common farm products, animals, and common sights on Illinois farms.

Kopping family recipe for Shrimp Creole (re-printed with permission of Linda Kopping)

2 tablespoons cooking oil

1 medium onion (chopped)

1 clove of garlic (minced)

1 medium green pepper (chopped)

1/2 cup of celery (chopped)

2 8 ounce cans of tomato sauce

1/2 cup of water

1 pound of fresh and cleaned cooked shrimp

Heat the oil.  Add the onions, garlic, green pepper, and celery.  Cook for about five minutes until slightly soft.  Stir in tomato sauce and water.  Simmer for about 10 minutes.  Add shrimp and heat thoroughly.  Serve over hot rice.

Culver’s “Scoops of Thanks” Day To Support Agriculture

Anyone with a sweet tooth can stop by any Culver’s restaurant on Tuesday, August. 11, 2015, also known as Scoops of Thanks Day. One Time Gubernatorial Candidate Dan Proft Meets with Farm Bureau Leaders

Dan Proft, senior fellow at the Illinois Policy Institute, radio personality and chairman of the Illinois Liberty Principles Super Political Action Committee met with Cook CFB members to discuss Illinois’ fiscal situation and the importance of being engaged in government.

Farm Bureau Considers Policy to Increase Oversight at the Illinois Tollway

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the Illinois Tollway bi-yearly provides a “summary activity report” to the Governor’s Office, Chairman of the Tollway Board of Directors, and the Illinois General Assembly.  The report details any new, pending, and concluded investigations, complaints, referrals, internal control evaluations, etc.  Per its administrative rules, OIG may also conduct self-initiated investigations without a compliant. Farm Bureau leaders are considering policy requiring the OIG to submit quarterly summary reports to the Governor’s Office, Chairman of the Tollway Board of Directors, and the Illinois General Assembly.  The policy submittal also supports seeking legislation to hold the Illinois Tollway accountable and responsible for the repair and maintenance of all overpass decks that are the result of tollway construction. Let the Farm Bureau Pay for Your Groceries

Aunt Arlene’s BBQ Beans (re-printed with permission from Tim Stuenkel)

Ingredients:
1-16 oz can of lima beans (drained)
1-16 oz can of butter beans (drained)
1-16 oz can of kidney beans (drained)
2-16 oz cans of navy beans (not drained)
½-lb of bacon (cut into small pieces)
½ lb of ham (cut into ½” cubes)
1 large yellow onion (chopped)
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup ketchup
¾ cup brown sugar
2 TB dry mustard

Lightly brown bacon in frying pan. Once browned, remove bacon and retain drippings in pan. Add onion and lightly sauté until onion softens. Add vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar & dry mustard, simmer 10-minutes.

Layer all ingredients in crock pot or oven-ready, covered dish, add sauce, stir lightly. Bake in 350ºF oven for 2-hours or simmer in crock pot for at least 2-4 hrs.

Manifolds, Manolos and Manure

Our neighbors to the east whose license plates read “taxation with representation” recently held an election for president of the District of Columbia Bar.  Annamaria Steward, an associate dean at the University of the District of Columbia’s law school beat her opponent, Laura Possessky by a grand total of 35 votes.  A whole 35 votes giving credence to the statement “every vote matters.” Interested in examples closer to home?  Remember former Governor Pat Quinn’s 2010 general election victory over Republican challenger Bill Brady?  Brady loss by less than 32,000 votes.  He, in fact, won 98 of Illinois 102 counties.  But fell a mid-size town short of victory.  Let’s take a minute to think about how different the state’s economic situation could be had there been a different leader from 2010 to 2014.
